mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. time is 6:00. east coast residents still recovering from hurricane sandy were hit again overnight. a nor'easter pounded the area with snow, rain and winds gusting up to 60 miles per hour. the storm is creating a deadly situation for those without power after sandy. it's put recovery efforts on hold. right now cbs 5 is manning with the red cross to partnering with other groups to help out. roberta gonzales is in our help center. >> reporter: i'm proud to be part of cbs 5's hurricane relief fund telethon. i'm going to be here from now until 7 p.m. each and every minute trying to raise a dollar from each and every one of you out there. so we're not leaving here until we have your support to help our friends across the country. in fact, we would like to give you a recap on what's happened over the past 7 days. it's been the american red cross, they have been there for the entire country in this will the battle for hurricane sandy. the red cross has served more than a million meals and snacks providing more than 17,000 health services and the emotional support

england this morning. the winter storm moved ashore in the same location where superstorm sandy hit last week. there are new power outages in the region and up to 8" of snow in some of the places just what they didn't need. and it's interrupting recovery efforts, as well. teresa garcia has more from rockaway beach, new york. talk about piling on, right? >> reporter: yes, and frank, a good cold morning to you. just when people here thought they would be getting a break after superstorm sandy, in came the first nor'easter. people were along the shoreline communities pretty concerned that this was going to cause more flooding because we already have the ground so saturated. but indeed it turned into a snow or wind-driven snowstorm more so and actually caused some record snowfalls there. in central park in new york city, four inches. in new jersey, connecticut, up to a foot. here in rockaway beach they had at least 4." and all this snow is causing the clean-up efforts to be that much more difficult. >> high winds and heavy snow whipped the boardwalk in rockaway beach in queens, new york. tha

on today. we would have a comment for later on today having more details. >>> first to super storm sandy, now it is slowly moving out not after bearing northeast and snow. the nor'easter has brought down more power lines and stopped computer trains again. utilities in new york and new jersey say 60,000 customers who lost pour because of sandy are back in the dark. it is another setback for people who are trying to bounce back from sandy. >> it is terrible, i am done. >> for thousands of people in coastal neighborhoods in new jersey, they were told to leave because of the potential for flooding in low-lying areas. several thousand feet were expected there. those waves were not as big but still worrisome. they are also doing a number on flights as well and airlines have canceled at least 1,300 flights to and from the metro area. fso does expect flights and jfk will be canceled today so call ahead if you are flying or expecting someone. 31 flights were canceled including connecticut and washington d.c. >>> president barack obama is back at the white house, no time to celebrate his victory.

:00, gasoline prices starting to fall even as the east coast experiences shortages due to super storm sandy. the average price for a gallon of gas is 4.08. oakland, 3075. we show you how prices have dropped and explains why. >> reporter: this is be probably the best place to get your finger on the average price of a gallon of gas in the bay area. this is just off of interstate 80. we were here last week, 3.99 a gallon and today it's 3.89, 10 cents cheaper per gallon in one week. the prices are projected to go down even more. the price of gas has trended downward over the last two weeks and is expected to continue that trend for another week or so. the switch to winter blend and a major drop in oil prices are the main reason for the drop. but also, remember last month? record high prices hit drivers hard in the early parts of october. two california refineries had production costs. the price drop is a reflection of march kit correction and indicate a more stable outlook for the future. >> i commute to san francisco. i had to make a loop around in order to not run out of gas. it's definitely
